Candidate story: from a whim application to a long term career

Candidate story: from a whim application to a long term career

We’re always proud to share the real stories of people whose careers have taken an exciting new direction through the opportunities we’ve helped them discover.

For many of our candidates, a single application leads to something truly life-changing. This is exactly what happened for Rebekka, whose journey with Thrive has taken her from an uncertain starting point to a permanent role she loves, with a clear path towards her dream career.

Learn about her experience, told in her own words, below.

Rebekka’s story

“My journey with Thrive Recruitment has genuinely changed my life. I was in a job that left me drained, working random hours and struggling to balance it with my university studies.

“On a bit of a whim, I applied to Thrive during the half-term break. Within half an hour, I had a call back, and the very next day I met Tom for an informal interview. Thanks to having my DBS already in place, I started my first role the following Monday!

“I was nervous to begin with. I’d never worked as a Teaching Assistant before and wasn’t sure what to expect. But Thrive really saw my potential. With a background in counselling and experience volunteering as a college-based therapist, I had the transferable skills; I just needed the opportunity.

“They placed me at CTSW, a college offering alternative provision, diploma, and adult learning. My first role was to support a construction student one-to-one. As someone with a chronic illness, I wasn’t sure I could manage, but the Thrive team encouraged me to give it a go for the rest of the week. I’m so glad I did.

“From there, everything grew. I built a great relationship with the student and soon began supporting more widely across the college. Thrive and CTSW have both been incredibly supportive, giving me the space to build confidence, shape the role to my strengths, and work flexibly around my university timetable. With my background in hairdressing, I was even given the opportunity to support students in the college salon.

“By June, just a few months after starting, I was offered a permanent role as a Learning Support Assistant, beginning in September. I’ll also be starting my counselling placement with CTSW at the same time, which brings me one step closer to qualification. The plan is to move into a full-time counselling role once I’m qualified—and that opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the support from Thrive and CTSW.

“Even now, Thrive continues to support me. With university finished for the summer, they’ve arranged short-term placements in schools closer to home, especially helpful before I had a car. They check in regularly, not just about work, but about how I’m doing personally. It’s that human touch that sets them apart.

“I honestly can’t thank Thrive enough. What started as a quick application has led to meaningful, long-term work, the freedom to grow in my career, and real belief in where I’m headed next.”
